The Launch Party
A Sunday in June at Fairy Lake Park — the Walk for Esther, costumes, music, and the start of the summer reading season.
~ Anything and Everywhere · A New Tradition ~
Four StoryWalks® unfolding across Newmarket, one for every season of summer —
all dedicated to the memory of a Swiss kindergarten teacher who believed every child deserved a book.
Chapter One · The Real Beginning
Esther Wehrli was a storyteller and kindergarten teacher in Switzerland — the kind of teacher who knew every storybook in the room by heart, and who believed that promoting reading was the most worthwhile thing an adult could do for a child. When she came to Newmarket to visit her brother Christian, two things made her happiest: walking the Tom Taylor Trail in the morning, and spending afternoons among the shelves of the public library.
When Esther passed away in 2021, Christian wanted to bring those two loves together — the woods and the words. The first two annual Fairy Trail Walks for Esther were that wish made real: a path you could walk with your children, one page at a time.
In 2026, the wish has grown. Newmarket Public Library has taken what began as a memorial and turned it into a tradition — four StoryWalks® across the town, unfolding one by one through summer and fall, all dedicated to Esther's memory.
— with love, Christian

Chapter Two · The Season
From May until October, the trees of Newmarket will quietly fill with pages. Each StoryWalk is free, each is dedicated to Esther, and each invites a different kind of afternoon.
A Sunday in June at Fairy Lake Park — the Walk for Esther, costumes, music, and the start of the summer reading season.
Four different parks. Four different books. One quiet trail through each, with pages mounted on posts at child-height.
The walks anchor the Library's Summer Reading Club — the season where Newmarket's children fall in love with books.
No tickets, no entry fee — every walk is open. The cost is carried by sponsors who believe in children's literacy.
Chapter Three · The Trail
Each of the four walks unfolds the same way — wooden posts spaced along a gentle loop, a children's book opened a page at a time as you stroll. Strollers welcome, dogs on a leash welcome, daydreaming highly encouraged.
Chapter Four · What it Adds Up To
What began as one brother's tribute has quietly grown into one of Newmarket's most loved family events. In 2025, the Library tracked more than eleven hundred children walking the trails — and more than twenty thousand people encountering the project through Library channels.
Anything and Everywhere. — Newmarket Library · 2026
In 2026, that one walk becomes four. Same posts. Same pages. Same dedication to Esther. Multiplied by four parks and one full summer.
Chapter Five · The Cause
Sponsorship of the Fairy Trail Walk for Esther goes directly to Newmarket Public Library — to install the four 2026 StoryWalks, buy new children's books, and keep the tradition open and free for every family in town.
Chapter the Last · How You Can Help
Sponsorship makes the walks free for every family in Newmarket. Four tiers, four ways to help a child fall in love with a book.
